A Couple of Days in Los Angeles

3 Apr

For the end of Spring Break, we decided to take a quick trip to Los Angeles, staying at an airbnb near Griffith Park. Even though it was a short visit, we were able to squeeze in some tasty gluten-free food that made me wonder why we go to LA so infrequently. When we arrived, we headed straight for the entirely gluten-free Erin McKenna’s Bakery on Larchmont for a snack. IMG_3812.jpgWe split two doughnuts, banana bread and a cookie sandwich filled with icing.

IMG_3813Not only were the items we selected delicious, they brought back great memories of going to BabyCakes in NYC when I was younger. The next morning, we got an early start to the day at Fonuts, an entirely gluten-free donut business. These “faux donuts” are baked rather than fried. Not only is this spot completely GF, it was also free of my daughter’s allergens which made a 5-year old very excited to be able to choose anything from the case. IMG_3830I chose the breakfast sandwich which consisted of a biscuit-type of donut/bread. I loved the flavor of it and considered getting a second one until I remembered we ordered lots of fonuts to sample.

IMG_3832.jpgThese three were the banana, churro and raspberry vanilla fonuts. We also had a banana chocolate and chocolate with sprinkles fonut. We did not leave hungry. After our hearty breakfast, we spent the morning exploring Griffith Park.

IMG_3852.jpgEverything was so green due to the recent rains. Our favorite part was the Ferndell Trail which was a shady, winding trail along a stream. It was mellow enough that both kids could walk it and sparked the imagination of our 5-year old who envisioned that fairies were hiding behind every corner. After tiring the young and not so young out, we headed back to our airbnb for nap/rest time. Thanks to a hot tip from April of Gluten is My Bitch, we got takeout from Stuff’d. Holy moly gluten-free dumplings. Corny For YouWe ordered three of these deliciously light and flavorful nuggets of goodness. The Corny For You was filled with cream of corn, ricotta and spinach.IMG_3875.jpgThe Siberian Classic dumplings were filled with beef and pork and were served with a sour cream sauce on the side. My personal favorite were the Hot Chick dumplings.

IMG_3877.jpgThey were filled with chicken and veggies and drenched in a Thai coconut curry. The good thing about eating these in the comfort of your home is that no one can judge you when you lick the container clean. How do people in Los Angeles eat anything other than these dumplings every day?

The next morning before we drove back to Santa Barbara, we ate breakfast at Hugo’s. As soon as we started talking to our waitress, it was clear that they took allergies very seriously. I ordered the Desayuno Fuerte which was two poached eggs over potato pancakes with sautéed spinach, garlic, onions, tomato and shredded parmesan.IMG_3895.jpgThe potatoes were so crispy and good. The dish was served with the restaurant’s homemade gluten-free flatbread.IMG_3893.jpgThis bread would be great for a sandwich. With our bellies full, we drove back to Santa Barbara.

Lilac Pâtisserie

19 Jan

Cherry SconeHurrah! Lilac Pâtisserie is finally open! This entirely gluten-free bakery and café on State Street is a very welcome addition to Santa Barbara. I stopped in today to check out the space and pick up some goodies. For now, they are holding off on their breakfast and lunch menus so that they can make sure that they are done right. There were plenty of treats to choose from though to satisfy any appetite. I had a cherry scone that was incredible. I found myself having a hard time deciding between the banana nut muffin and apple crisp muffin, so I got both.

banana nut muffinApple Crisp MuffinI also couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have a toffee nut cookie which was very satisfying. Oh, did I mention I also got a brownie to go? They have two huge cases featuring their attractive and yummy cakes. I am already trying to decide which to get for our little one’s upcoming first birthday.

GF cakesThe only thing I could find wrong about Lilac was that it is going to challenge my lack of self-control. Stay tuned for Gluten-Free Santa Barbara’s next meet up at our new favorite eatery in town!

Crumbs Gluten-Free Bakery

7 Jan

GF Crumbs SignThe hubs and I made a last trip back home while I was still allowed to fly. While in NYC, we decided to try out the new Crumbs Gluten-Free Bakery. As we were there early in the morning, it didn’t seem right to have a cupcake.

Crumbs GF CupcakesThey did look very enticing though. Instead, we ordered a blueberry muffin and an apple crumb muffin.

GF Blueberry MuffinThe blueberry muffin was a little bit dry. The apple crumb muffin was great though.

Apple Crumb GF MuffinOne thing that I would suggest is to put in a couple of tables and chairs to enjoy the items there. It was snowing outside so we wanted to just sit somewhere to eat the muffins. When I asked the girl behind the counter, she said that they didn’t have any seating so that people would not be inclined to bring in outside food that may not be GF.

Petunia’s Pies & Pastries

7 Aug

Rose Test GardenThere are so many beautiful outdoor spaces in Portland. One day we walked to the Rose Test Garden which was massive compared to our Santa Barbara rose garden. Here, there were over 7,000 rose plants. After stopping to smell the roses, we continued to the Japanese Garden.

Portland Japanese GardenKnown as the most authentic Japanese garden outside of Japan, this was also very beautiful. By now we had worked up an appetite so we walked back towards our hotel to think about our next meal. On the way, we just happened to walk by a completely gluten-free and vegan bakery called Petunia’s.

Petunia's BakeryThis place was amazing. After much deliberation, we decided on the Peanut Butter Crispy Bar.

Peanut Butter Crispy BarThis was like a peanut butter rice crispy treat…. how could that ever be bad? There were so many appealing looking things in the case. The bakery itself was really cute too, offering made-to-order coffee beverages and cocktails.

Sick

3 Apr

Care PackageSince last Sunday, I have been home sick with a bad case of the flu. Forcing me to miss 10 days of work, this has been no ordinary flu. One of the only things that cheered me up in that time was this care package left on my stoop by my good friend that also happens to be celiac. I hadn’t had a Juice Ranch juice before, but I found that all of the nutrients that were packed into this particular juice was exactly what my body needed. I also enjoyed munching on the GF banana muffin she left me from Recipes.

Adama – Santa Barbara’s First Entirely GF Restaurant!

28 Jan

Curried Onion RingsAs of last week, Santa Barbara got its first entirely gluten-free restaurant when Adama decided to revamp their menu. How great is it that we can eat out locally and know that we can order every single thing on the menu?! I decided to head over there for lunch the other day to try the new menu out. I started with the Curried Onion Rings which were unbelievably crispy and satisfying. I then had  the Twisted wrap.

TwistedThis had southern fried “chicken” strips that were wrapped in a rice tortilla with ranch, lettuce and tomatoes. Even though I was nervous about it, I liked the consistency of the “chicken” strips. For dessert, I had a chocolate chip cookie.

Chocolate Chip CookieLooking for the perfect excuse to try out the new menu at Adama? Come join Gluten-Free Santa Barbara on Tuesday, February 5th at 6:00 PM at Adama for our winter meet-up. If tasty libations, yummy food and gluten-free people aren’t enough of a reason to come (what is wrong with you?!), then I have another reason… Celiac Dietician Melinda Dennis will be there to offer information and guidance. RSVP on the Gluten-Free Santa Barbara Facebook page or send me an email at glutenfreeinsb@gmail.com.
