Hip Vegan Cafe

17 Jul

Avocado WrapI know… it has been a looooong time since I have shared a new restaurant on here. There is something about summer that makes time fly by. Today, I had the day off, so we decided to go on the pretty drive to Ojai. There, we tried Hip Vegan Cafe. All gluten-free items are clearly labeled on their menu. Additionally, when I had questions, they were very aware of what was in each dish. I ordered the Avocado Wrap. This had avocado, lettuce, tomato and red onion wrapped in rice paper. I also had a choice of GF dipping sauces. I ended up getting the peanut sauce which was quite delicious. This came with soup or salad. I went with their special Indian Dahl soup of the day.

Indian Dahl SoupThis was incredibly flavorful. It might have been crazy to have soup since it was in the 90s, but I was glad I did.

Papa Lennon’s

30 Apr

Pasta PrimaveraAfter getting my hair done today in Ojai, I decided to get some lunch at Papa Lennon’s. They have gluten-free pizza available and even make their own crust. However, after asking some questions, I found that they use the same surface and utensils for the GF and regular crusts. They also have gluten-free pasta available. After confirming that the pasta would be cooked in a clean pot and with clean utensils, I ordered the Pasta Primavera. This had sauteed seasonal vegetables, freshly grated parmesan cheese and a pesto cream sauce. It was hearty and warm which was appreciated as it was quite overcast today.

Suzanne’s Cuisine

7 Dec

Chicken ChiliThis week, the husband and I escaped to Ojai for lunch. We decided to try Suzanne’s Cuisine as I had heard good things. I started with the Chicken Chili which was the special soup for the day. I then had the Southwest Salad of three rices.

Southwest Salad of Three Rices

This had wild, brown and jasmine rice, vegetables, smoked turkey, green chilies, corn and feta cheese. I could have just had the salad as it was very filling. I really loved the variety of rices along with the feta. Everything tasted very fresh. I found that our waitress was very informative on what was GF and not. They have a nice outdoor patio there as well which enhanced the meal!

The Farmer and the Cook

22 Jul

Just about a 35 minute drive from Santa Barbara is a special spot called The Farmer and the Cook. This all organic, vegetarian cafe get most of their produce from their nearby farm. More importantly, on weekends, they have gluten-free pizza! I started with a special salad that had sweet corn, green beans, avocado, lettuce and a barbeque tomato vinaigrette. I then ordered the GF Mexican Pizza.

This pizza had caramelized onions, goat cheese, summer squash, red peppers, jalapenos and pesto. The crust of the pizza was predominantly garbanzo flour and had a really nice consistency. One of my fellow diners also got a gluten-free pizza.

This one was the Yukon Gold Potato and Rosemary Pizza. It had potatoes, parmesan, mozzarella, red pepper, caramelized onions, garlic and rosemary. All of the ingredients used were so fresh and full of flavor. There is a small market inside where you can purchase produce and packaged goods, many of which are gluten-free! Additionally there are baked goods including a GF peanut butter cookie that was calling my name.

Lunch in Ojai

13 Jan

I had a whole day with nothing planned which felt phenomenal. I thought it was the perfect opportunity to do some exploring in Ojai. I took the CA-150 Route since I previously had only gone via CA-33. It was to my surprise and delight that I found views like the picture above. The road takes you right along Lake Casitas which is just beautiful with the mountains set around it. Once it Ojai, my mom and I did some exploring. There are a bunch of shops which were fun to look in. When it was time to eat, we ended up going to a natural food store that had a cafe called Rainbow Bridge. When I asked if they had gluten-free bread available for their sandwiches, the lady behind the counter told me that they had Udi’s! Woohoo!

I got a veggie sandwich that had avocado, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, carrots and sprouts. It was the perfect veggie sandwich. I definitely want to return to Ojai to try some of the restaurants in the area that I have read about.
